Grammar notes
Basic clause structure and the transitive construction
Subjects (A- and S-arguments), whether nominal or pronominal, are indexed on the verb for person, number, and gender. In the basic transitive construction (TR), if the second argument (Y) is definite, it is flagged with the l- marker. Additionally, it is indexed on the preceding predicate with a suffix that agrees with the number and gender of the object, e.g. #33 Abrahām yǝˁġǝf-a l-Maryam , lit. ‘Abraham knows-her l-Maryam’. If it is indefinite, it is neither indexed nor flagged.
Outside of the TR valency pattern, the double marking with the pronominal suffix and the l- appears also with definite indirect objects (#31), as well external possessors (#2) and possessors in the genitive constructions (#1). The IO status is, however, distinguished from the DO by an additional l- suffix inserted before the object index, compare #17 and #19.
Non-core arguments are introduced by various prepositions.
Case system
There is no morphological case on nouns.
Verb lemmas
Verbs are cited according to their root, e.g. #6 šbh . When the lexeme is non-verbal or the root is non-descriptive, the 3 person masculine singular perfective form is used, e.g. #5 kān kāfi .
Glossing abbreviations
ART — article; DEF — definite; DU — dual; FS — feminine singular; GEN — genitive; IO — indirect object; IPFV — imperfective; MS — masculine singular; O — object; PFV — perfective; PL — plural; PN — person name; POSS — possessive; PRS — present; PTCP — participle; REL — relative; RPS — reported past; SG — singular.
